Ledger Live – Complete App Setup & User Guide
Introduction to Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official software application for managing Ledger hardware wallets, including Ledger Nano S Plus and Ledger Nano X. It allows users to securely store, buy, sell, swap, and stake cryptocurrencies while keeping private keys isolated inside the Ledger device. With Ledger Live, you can track your portfolio in real time, manage supported coins, install apps, and verify transactions directly on your hardware wallet screen.
The application works as a bridge between your Ledger device and the blockchain ecosystem. It ensures your financial data is protected while offering a trusted gateway for all crypto transactions.
Step 1: Download Ledger Live
Begin by downloading the official Ledger Live application on your PC or mobile device. It is available for:
Windows
macOS
Linux
Android & iOS
Always download Ledger Live from the official source only, and never use third-party links or modified versions. After downloading, install the application on your device and launch it.
Step 2: Connect Your Ledger Device
Once Ledger Live opens:
Connect your Ledger Nano device with the USB cable.
If you are using a Ledger Nano X, you may also choose Bluetooth option (mobile only).
Enter the PIN on your Ledger device to authenticate access.
The application will detect the device and automatically check whether you need a firmware update.
Step 3: Update Firmware (If Required)
Firmware updates help add new features, fix bugs, and enhance device security. If the app prompts you to update firmware:
Confirm the update within Ledger Live.
Approve the update on your device screen.
Never install firmware from external sources. Ledger Live handles the entire process securely.
Step 4: Choose Wallet Setup Option
When your device is recognized, Ledger Live will provide two options:
Set Up as New Device
Restore Device from Recovery Phrase
To create a new wallet, select Set Up as New Device. Ledger will generate new private keys and secure seed words directly inside the hardware wallet.
Step 5: Secure Your Recovery Phrase
Your Ledger device will display a 24-word recovery phrase, which acts as the backup for your wallet. This phrase is the foundation of your crypto security. Make sure to:
Write the phrase on paper or a fireproof metal backup
Never store it digitally (no screenshots, cloud, or emails)
Keep it hidden and secure offline
Never share it with anyone
Never enter it on any computer or website
Loss or exposure of your recovery phrase can lead to a complete loss of funds. Ledger employees will never ask you for it.
Step 6: Install Apps & Add Accounts
After backing up the recovery phrase, Ledger Live will guide you to install apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage. Each crypto requires a separate app on the device. After installing:
Click Add Account
Select the crypto asset (e.g., BTC, ETH, LTC)
Sync it with the blockchain through Ledger Live
You can now send, receive, and manage that asset securely through the application.
Step 7: Manage Crypto with Ledger Live
Once your accounts are set up, Ledger Live allows you to:
Check balances and transaction history
Buy supported crypto through integrated partners
Swap and exchange selected assets
Stake supported coins to earn rewards
Receive crypto using secure verified addresses
Send crypto with mandatory confirmation on the device
Every outgoing transaction must be confirmed on the Ledger device screen, ensuring maximum protection against malware or hacks.
